To Proclaim April as Parkinson's Awareness Month and Recognize the Parkinson's Foundation's Moving Day

WHEREAS, Parkinson’s disease is a chronic, progressive neurological disease and is the second most common neurodegenerative disease in the United States; and,
WHEREAS, Parkinson’s disease is estimated to affect approximately one million people in America and the prevalence will rise to 1.2 million people by 2030; and,
WHEREAS, the current diagnosis rate for Parkinson’s disease has reached 90,000 new people each year; and,
WHEREAS, the symptoms of Parkinson’s disease vary from person to person and can include tremors; slowness of movement and rigidity; difficulty with balance, swallowing, chewing and speaking, cognitive impairment and dementia, mood disorders, and a variety of other non-motor symptoms; and,
WHEREAS, increased research, education, and community support services such as those provided by the Parkinson’s Foundation and other organizations are needed to find more effective treatments and to provide access to quality care to those living with the disease today; and,
WHEREAS, the Parkinson’s Foundation is a national organization with a distinguished chapter in Columbus that helps individuals who have been diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease; and,
WHEREAS, the Foundation continues to work diligently to provide support for researchers and those with Parkinson’s disease and encourage awareness across the country; and,
WHEREAS, movement, such as walking and calisthenics, has been shown to help manage the symptoms of Parkinson’s disease; and,
WHEREAS, on Saturday, April 26 2025 the Parkinson’s Foundation will be hosting the 12th Annual Moving Day Columbus, a fundraising event and walk for Parkinson’s Disease at Wolfe Park; Now, Therefore
BE IT RESOLVED THAT THIS COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF COLUMBUS: hereby formally proclaim April 2025 as Parkinson’s Awareness Month and commends the Parkinson’s Foundation’s work, and highlights their a...
