To recognize April 2010 as Sexual Assault Awareness Month.

WHEREAS, on April 2, 2010 the president of the United States declared the month of April National Sexual Assault Awareness Month; and
 
WHEREAS, this year the campaign, organized by the National Sexual Violence Resource Center, focuses on preventing sexual violence on higher education campuses; and
 
WHEREAS, college students experience disproportionately high rates of sexual violence, with one in five college students reporting sexual assault by the time of graduation; and
 
WHEREAS, Columbus is home to many college campuses and institutions of higher education and the City is committed to helping promote violence prevention education to all students and to the broader community; and
 
WHEREAS, community-wide awareness, assault prevention education and services for victims of sexual assault work hand in hand to make our communities and campuses safer for all;
 
WHEREAS, Columbus applauds the efforts of groups that work together to better address sexual violence, educate the public about sexual assault prevention, and ensure survivors connect with crucial services; now, therefore:
 
 
BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF COLUMBUS:
 
That the month of April 2010 is hereby declared Sexual Assault Awareness Month in Columbus.
 
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to the Ohio Alliance to End Sexual Violence.
